Matt black vs other black finishes

Not all blacks are the same on cast iron. Knowing the difference helps you choose.

Matt black: The most popular black finish for cast iron. Flat, non-reflective, contemporary. Works in modern, industrial and statement period interiors. Applied from our standard Paladin palette at the lowest black colour price point.

Farrow & Ball Railings No.31: A very dark, slightly warm near-black that sits closer to black than any other F&B shade. Less flat than pure matt black. Suits period rooms where a pure matt black would feel too stark.

Farrow & Ball Off-Black No.57: A softer near-black with brown undertones. The Montpellier is shown in Off-Black in our product photography. Works beautifully on ornate models where the warmth of the tone suits the period character.

Farrow & Ball Pitch Black No.256: The deepest, purest black in the F&B range. Bold and uncompromising. Suits rooms where the radiator is meant to be a focal point.

Are black radiators more efficient than white?

What matters at radiator temperatures is how the surface emits infrared, and that's governed by the paint film rather than the colour you see, so a black radiator and a white one of the same design perform much the same. Most heat from a radiator is transferred by convection (hot air rising from the surface) rather than radiation in any case. Choose black for the design reasons, not the efficiency ones. The material underneath is what drives the heat retention. Cast iron's thermal mass keeps rooms warm long after the boiler stops regardless of the colour on the outside.
